ROTTERDAM OVERVIEW:

Rotterdam is truly a world city. It is world-renowned for its modern port, the largest in Europe. In the inner-city harbours where the port activities started developing centuries ago, the bustling waterfront has been transformed into lively entertainment districts. They have become the new face of Rotterdam on the Maas. The Maas river runs through the city centre, crossed by the now-famous Erasmus Bridge which has become the symbol of the city. The city is also known for the architecture.
The impressive skyline with the highest tower and biggest building in The Netherlands, the amazing cube houses, the internationally acclaimed Markthal and the newly opened central station turns this city into the architectural capital of the world.

WHAT TO DO?:

Art is very important for the city. A major exhibition in the Kunsthal, an enthralling concert in De Doelen or that fun little art gallery in Witte de Withstraat: the full scope of arts and culture is an intrinsic part of the city’s allure. The city offers top museums that present exceptional exhibitions, such as the Kunsthal and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, but also boasts numerous smaller galleries. Rotterdam is alive the whole year with festivals and events related to (urban) culture, sport and music.
Besides all this, you will find a diversity of shopping districts. From exclusive to popular, from megastore to small boutique, situated in an arcade or a bustling street.

CLIMATE:

The Netherlands with its long North Sea coast, has a moderate sea climate. The sea’s influence ensures that it’s not too cold during winter (average of 3,5 degrees Celsius in January), not too hot during summer (average of 22 degrees Celsius in July), and there is always sufficient moisture in the air. If you plan to visit Holland, it would be wise to keep this in mind. Popular months to visit The Netherlands are between April and November, but some say Rotterdam actually comes alive during winter. Imagine watching the mind-blowing fireworks during New Year’s Eve at the Erasmus Bridge, visiting two of the largest cultural events of the Netherlands (International Film Festival & Art Week) or enjoying one of the largest hypes: the indoor foodie scene!

GETTING THERE:

This great city is accessible by airplane, car, coach, train or even boat. ‘Rotterdam / The Hague Airport’ welcomes many European destinations, and for those travelling from intercontinental countries Schiphol Airport Amsterdam is their entry to Rotterdam. Schiphol Airport to Rotterdam is a 50-minute drive by coach or a 26 minute train ride. Rotterdam is also easily accessible by car, coach or train from many other European metropoles.

GETTING AROUND:

Just like Amsterdam, Rotterdam is a compact city and walking is often the best way to get around the city. To travel further or faster, Rotterdam offers an excellent public transport service with the choice of metro, tram or coaches.
Just like everywhere in Holland, the bicycle is the easiest, fun sometimes even fastest way of getting around. There are multiple bike rental possibilities for those looking for an active way of sightseeing. Having Europe’s largest harbour, water taxis are also a beautiful way of viewing the city.

ACCOMMODATION & BUSINESS:

Rotterdam houses more than 5000 hotel rooms and welcomes approximately 500.000 hotel guests each year, making it the second best visited city of The Netherlands. Of course there are 1 to 5 star hotels and since tourism in Rotterdam is growing fast the last couple of decades most hotels are modern and up to date with their refurbishments.
Rotterdam is also a popular business travel destination, especially for housing congresses. Rotterdam actually promotes itself as a congress city and is known as a ‘knowledge’-city, partly due to the Erasmus hospital and university.
Besides that Rotterdam has a very modern architecture, design and infrastructure, making it interesting for business travellers seeking inspiration.

PERFORMANCE TRAVEL SAYS:

We believe Rotterdam is a great up and coming MICE destination. We have the privilege of working in Rotterdam on a regular basis. The city, the people, atmosphere and let’s not forget the affordable hotel rates make this city a great destination.
